Marissa Galicia-Castillo, MD, is the Director of the Glennan Center for Geriatrics and Gerontology and holds the prestigious John Franklin Distinguished Chair for Geriatrics at Eastern Virginia Medical School (EVMS). She also serves as the Director of the Brock Fellowship in Hospice and Palliative Medicine, which she was instrumental in establishing.
Board-certified in Internal Medicine, Geriatrics, and Hospice and Palliative Medicine, Dr. Galicia-Castillo is a nationally recognized leader in the field. As a recipient of the Geriatrics Academic Career Award, she further advanced her expertise by earning a Master’s in Education from Old Dominion University. She is a Fellow of the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine, the American Geriatrics Society, and the American College of Physicians.
Since 2008, Coastal Virginia Magazine has named Dr. Galicia-Castillo a “Top Doc” in both Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine. Her contributions to education include the development of the Lillian & Gideon Welles Grime Fellowship in Geriatrics and the innovative Geriatrics-Internal Medicine (GeriMed) residency program at EVMS. She has also served as Chair of the Ethics Committee at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.
A Norfolk native, Dr. Galicia-Castillo is deeply rooted in her community. She completed her undergraduate and medical education through the joint BS-MD program between Old Dominion University and EVMS, earning her bachelor’s degree in biochemistry before continuing on to complete her residency and fellowship training at EVMS. She was selected as Chief Resident in Internal Medicine, further solidifying her leadership within the institution.
In addition to her academic and fellowship leadership, Dr. Galicia-Castillo serves as Medical Director for the Palliative Medicine teams at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, Lake Taylor Transitional Care Hospital, and Beth Sholom Village. She also currently leads the Norfolk Academy of Medicine as its president.
Her career reflects a deep commitment to clinical excellence, ethical leadership, education, and compassionate care for aging and seriously ill populations.
